It Just Get Better
The backyard project continues. Last Friday we had 10 yards of top soil delivered. That is a lot of dirt to move. Friday night I got started with my now very unbalanced wheel barrow. One of the handles has lost a nut for the screw and has become very loose. I haven't replaced the nut yet. I worked until it got to dark to see. When I woke Saturday morning I went out to the driveway to see how much was left. My first thought was that someone during the night went into the backyard, removed the dirt and placed it back into the pile. Unfortunately that did not happen. I looked. The backyard was full of dirt and I still had a shit load to move. That night after work I moved more dirt until really late. I did not finish. I saved that task for Sunday morning. After three more hours of moving the crud, the top soil was layed down. My father came over mid-morning to help lay down the sod which arrived late morning. We got to work. Smoothing the top soil with a rake was easy, transferring the rolls of sod to the back was not. A few rolls fell of the wheel barrow, causing all kinds of havoc. Some of the rolls fell apart in my hands and this started the worrying. My father was very helpful in showing me how to lay it down properly. He works at a golf course and has done this kind of work often. My second worry started when he asked me where we bought the stuff and when I told him he silently raised an eyebrow in concern. It took about four hours to get it all down and we started the watering after my very kind neighbor Henry loaned me a sprinkler which I had not thought to purchase. My father raised his eyebrow again. We had a couple of beers together and then he went home. As the sun started to set I noticed that some of the grass was a little brown. At first I became very concerned, but then I thought it was probably my eye sight from being out in the sun all day. Monday morning my wife had to catch a plane to Vegas early, so I decided to get up with her and water the yard before it got to hot. My feet stopped dead when I saw the grass. Half of it was now very brown. What the hell, less than twenty four hours and the lawn is dying. I watered it very heavy in the morning and then added some starter fertilizer in the evening followed by another heavy water. Today is Wednesday and the lawn has showed no sign of approvements. The curse has begun. Another $600.00 and the shit has died. New total: $2200.00
